For the first few weeks of my son Jesse's life, I tried to swaddle him with a square blanket - the traditional way. If you get it right, it works and it's great, but if you get it wrong, your baby wriggles its way out, releasing its arms and then wakes up by hitting itself in the head. This is not conducive to resettling or sleeping!!
You swaddle a baby so it feels safe and secure. The theory is that your baby feels like it's still in the womb, to remind them of the safest place they first knew, inside their creator. We know that we were created by God and in His image, therefore we are supposed to feel safe and secure in that knowledge all the time.
The simple fact is, it doesn't always feel like that. As a baby, if Jesse is distressed, I swaddle him and it doesn't take long for him to calm down and fall asleep. Our creator can't physically swaddle us when we need Him but He is always with us. When we take our insecurities and concerns to Him, He will give us a peace that can surpass all understanding. He is always with us and He will always sustain us.
THE BIBLE TEACHES US
Joshua 1:9 says 'Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.'
Psalms 55:22 also reminds us to 'Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.'
PRAY
Lord as I start my day, help me remember that you will always be with me. In every decision that I make, in every conversation that I have. I will stand firm in that knowledge that you, my Creator God, love me unconditionally. Take my day Lord, it is yours:)
THINK
When do you feel safe and secure?
What do you do if you are feeling a little sad?
